Hannah McVicar’s work focuses on the plants that have shaped our landscape.
She predominantly creates her work through screenprinting, using multiple layers to capture the delicacy and character of the plant paying particular attention to the intricacy and design of the flower. Hannah’s fascination for the structure and form of plants can be traced back to her upbringing on an organic herb farm. Her work has also been influenced by her research into the history of botanical print, tracing it back to the 16th century woodcuts produced by the apothecaries.
Hannah’s current series captures the architectural structure of the Apiaceae family of plants, with their dynamic strong stems and elegant umbel flowers. In the language of flowers, Fennel, symbolises strength. Her work invites the viewer to appreciate the power of plants.
